Three-year grant expands music therapy program

Beth Merz believes so strongly in the healing power of music that she worked at Operation Breakthrough full-time on a part-time salary for months, hoping that funding for the music therapy program would come through.

Her wish – and that of many others at Operation Breakthrough – came true in December when the Kenneth L. and Eva S. Smith Foundation committed $60,000 a year for three years to the program.

The number of children benefiting from music therapy has since increased tenfold. In addition to providing one-on-one therapy, Beth can now travel with her drums and keyboard from classroom to classroom so that all the children can use music to express their emotions and creativity.

“The Kenneth L. and Eva S. Smith Foundation is honored to play a small role in the innovative and amazingly productive music therapy program at Operation Breakthrough,” says Trustee Tom Jones.
And that, of course, is music to our ears!
